In January of 2011, goaltender Warren Hill and the Kanienkehaka Krunch won gold in the Elite Division of the Dick’s Sporting Goods Tournament of Champions, the pre-collegiate club lacrosse national championship. Hill was named the championship game MVP, making him the first and only goalie in tournament history to receive the accolade. On that championship team were seven of his U-19 Iroquois Nationals teammates, a group that will pursue gold again in the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) U-19 World Championships in Turku, Finland next month.

In fact, 15 of the Nationals’ 26-man roster played in the Dick’s Sporting Goods Tournament of Champions in past years, including M/FO Lyle Thompson (University at Albany ‘15), M/A Randy Staats (Onondaga Community College), and A Ky Tarbell.

“It is an awesome tournament, with great weather and good competition, said Nationals A Seth Oakes (committed to the University at Albany), who played with Hill on the 2011 championship team.

“Our goal was to go to the best tournaments and see how we do,” said Gabe Oakes, Krunch head coach and father to Seth. “We got beat a lot early when we were younger, but we got a lot better and I think that came from participating in the Dick’s Sporting Goods Tournament of Champions.”

In July, the Nationals will look to use their past tournament experiences to improve upon the team’s third-place finish at the 2008 FILU-19 World Lacrosse Championships.

“This year’s 2012 Iroquois Nationals team is the best team that we have selected in our 10 years as a program,” said Denise Waterman, the team’s executive director. “The players are excited and we are gaining a lot of support from our community.”

“This group of kids (that I have known since they were kids playing box lacrosse in Canada) is the strongest group all-around,” said Gabe Oakes. “They have a chance to win gold.”
